Child Support Grant
If you are needy you can apply for a grant to raise your own child or the child you look after. Here are the important details you should know:
Pre-requisite To Qualify
- Be the main caregiver of the child (e.g. parent, grandparent or a child over 16 years old who is leading a family). In case you are not a parent of the child, you have to prove that you are the main person taking care of the child by submitting an affidavit by a police officer, a report by a social worker, an affidavit by the biological parent or a letter by the principal of the school that the child studies.
- Be a permanent resident or a South African Citizen.
- Earn more than R52800 per year and you are single. Your income must not exceed R105600 per annum if you are married.
- The child must be under 18 years old.
- The child should not be in care of any state institution.
- The child must be living with the primary caregivers who are not paid to look after the child.
- You and the child should be residents of South Africa.
- You can get this grant only for 6 adopted children.

Older Person’s Grant
This grant is for industrial aged 60 or above. An old grant provided so the senior citizens can fulfil their basic requirements.
Pre-requisite To Qualify
- You should be a South African Citizen, a refugee or a resident.
- You live in South Africa.
- You should not be receiving any other social grants.
- You should not be in care of a state institution.
- Your annual income should be not more than R86280 if you are single and R172560 if you are married.
- Your assets should not be worth more than 1227600 if you are single. It should not exceed R2455200 if you are married.

You will receive R 2310 per month as a maximum. And if you are above the age of 75 years, you will receive R2330.

Condition In Which Grant Is Suspended

When Will the Grant End?
The grant will expire when:
- Pass away.

Note: If you are admitted to an institution that has a contract with the state to take care of you, the social grant is cut down to 25 percent of the maximum amount of the grant. This will commence in the fourth month after your admission in that institution. The lesser grant is re-instated effective as soon as you are released from the institution.

- You have to fill an affidavit on a regular SASSA document in presence of a Commissioner of Oaths that is not a SASSA employee.
- You have to carry a sworn statement by a worthy individual (such as a councillor, traditional leader, social worker, minister of religion or school principal) to affirm your name and age.
- Your fingerprints will be taken by the SASSA official.
- Your application will be forwarded to the Department of Home Affairs to apply and obtain the ID during the processing of your application. Failure to receive an ID will result in the suspension of your grant.
- Evidence of your marital status (where necessary).

- Evidence of your income and/or dividends (as applicable).

- Evidence of your personal pension (as any).
- Your bank statements over the last three months.
- A copy of your membership of the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) (‘blue book’) or a discharge certificate of your last employer, in case you were gainfully employed.
- In case your spouse passed away in the past five years, a copy of the will, and the first and final liquidation and distribution accounts, where necessary.
Note: In case you are above the age or are unwell to travel to the office to make an application, a family member or a friend can make an application on your behalf. The individual ought to accept a letter of yours and/or a medical note indicating the reason why you are unable to go to the office.
- Fill the application form in the presence of a SASSA officer (please note that the application form can only be filled by you as an applicant or a SASSA official). You will be interviewed by the officer and informed whether you are eligible for the grant.
