Applying for the SASSA Disability Grant

If you are disabled and unable to work to meet your financial needs, don’t worry. The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provides a disability grant to those who cannot work due to physical or mental disabilities. They give monthly financial support to take care of themselves and their families. Also you can check your SASSA Status.

If you have a physical and mental disability, which makes you unfit to work for more than 6 months, you are qualified to apply for the disability grant and now you can apply your SASSA fund confidently!

How to Apply for the SASSA Disability Grant?

Here is the step-by-step full guideline on how to apply for the Sassa disability grant. The application form is not available online, so you have to visit the nearest SASSA office and follow the shared instructions here;

• Complete a disability grant application form at your nearest Sassa office 
• Submit the following documents with your application
• Bring your 13-digit barcoded South African ID

If you don’t have an ID, then follow the procedure. 

• Fill out the special SASSA affidavit form in front of a commissioner of oath (not be a SASSA worker )
• Bring a statement signed by someone trusted, like(a councillor, minister or school principal ) who confirms your name or age.    
• SASSA will take your fingerprints 
• They will send you to the Department of Home Affairs to apply for an ID. 
• Your grant may be stopped if you don’t get your ID in time.      
• Provide a medical report or functional assessment that shows your disability 
• Proof of marital status (if required )
• Proof your residence where you live 
• Proof of your income or money you received 
• Proof of your property or other assets
• Proof of private pension, if any 
• Proof of bank statement for the last three months
• Bring your refugee status or 13-digit refuge ID (if you’re a refuge )
• Discharge certificate from your previous employer if you were employed 
• Unemployment insurance fund (UIF) document (blue book )if you’re unemployed )
• If your spouse passed away in the last 5 years, then bring a copy of the will

Once you handle all the documents, sassa will give you the recipients. Keep it safe as it is proof as you apply for the SASSA disability grant. 

What are the Eligibility Criteria for the SASSA Disability Grant?

To qualify for a disability grant from SASSA, you must meet the following requirements:

• Undergo a medical examination by a doctor appointed by SASSA.
• Must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee.
• Reciever presence in South Africa at the time of application.
• Age between 18 and 59 years old.
• Not be receiving treatment at a state (government) institution.
• Equipped with a 13-digit South African ID (barcode ID).
• If single, you must not earn more than R86 280 per year.
• If married, combined income must not be more than R172 560 per year.
• For single ones, the total value of your assets must not exceed R1 227 600.
• If married, the total value of your joint assets must not exceed R2 455 200.
• Submit your latest medical records (not older than 3 months).

The SASSA-approved doctor will assess your medical condition and submit a report. This medical report is only valid for three months, so make sure to apply for the grant within that time.

But it is important to note that the report will be valid for three months. You have to apply for the grant within that period. Meanwhile check also SASSA Payment Dates for your memory. 

Note: If you are younger than 18 years old and want someone to care for you all the time, the Sassa disability grant provides a care dependency grant. The person who looks after the child (parent and guardian ) can easily apply for the grant. 

Those who don’t have an ID can fill out the form called an affidavit and also have to show off the application to the Department of Home Affairs. If you still have not applied for an ID yet, you have to do it within the 3-month time duration after you apply. 

What if your Application was Cancelled or Rejected?

After you apply, SASSA will send you an official letter if your application was approved or not. If your application is not approved, the latter will explain the reasoning briefly. 

It also allows you to appeal against the letter if you don’t agree with the decision. You can appeal by writing a letter to the minister of social development. Explain the reading why you should get the grant. It is important to note that you have to appeal a letter within 90 days of receiving a letter from SASSA.

What is the Difference between Temporary and Permanent Disability Grants?

SASSA offers two types of disability grants based on the duration of your case:

1. Temporary Disability Grant:

This grant is for people whose disability lasts more than 6 months but less than 12 months. It’s meant to support you during a short-term period when you’re unable to work due to your health.

2. Permanent Disability Grant:

If your condition is expected to last longer than 12 months or is considered long-term, you may qualify for this grant.

However, “permanent disability” doesn’t mean you’ll receive the grant for life. SASSA can review your medical condition from time to time to check if you still meet the requirements.

Does SASSA check Any Review After  Grant application?

SASSA checks your situation from time to time to see if you still qualify for the grant. If anything in your life changes (like your health, income, address, or bank account), you must tell SASSA. If you don’t, your grant can stop.

• SASSA will send you a letter at least 3 months before the review, telling you when and where to go.
• If you’re too sick to go, inform, so they can come to your home.
• After the review, they’ll give you a receipt. Keep it safe as proof.

Your grant can be stopped if:

• Your health or income changes,
• You don’t go for the review or don’t help,
• You give wrong or fake information,
• You change your details and don’t tell SASSA.
