If you are an older soldier, who fought in the Second World War (1939–1945) or the Korean War (1950–1953), unable to support yourself, you can apply for the War Veterans Grant. This type of grant is specially designed for veterans who served the country and are now unable to take care of themselves. Only those South African citizens whose financial situation is below a certain level can get the grant. It depends on the means test and changes every year. How To Apply For The SASSA War Veterans Grant?
You can apply for the SASSA War Veterans Grant by following a few simple steps. Make sure you have below mentioned documents ready before you start.
Go to the nearest SASSA office and bring the following documents:
- Your 13-digit barcoded South African identity document
If You Don’t Have An ID:
- Fill out an affidavit form in the presence of the commissioner of oaths
- A sworn statement signed by a trusted person confirming your name or age
- Proof you applied for the ID at the Department of Home Affairs
- Temporary ID issued by the Department of Home Affairs
- Proof and certificate of your war service
- Proof of medical report that you cannot work
- Proof of your marital status
Depending On Your Marital Status:
- If you’re single, an affidavit stating that you are single
- If married, the marriage certificate and your spouse’s identity document
- If divorced, divorce court order
- If your spouse is deceased, proof of death certificate
If You And/Or Your Spouse Are Employed:
- Proof of both payslips
- If unemployed, bring UIF documentation
- Proof of your last employer discharge certificate
- Bank statement for the last 3 months
- Proof of any other income or assets
- Proof of pension if receiving one
Complete the application form in the presence of a SASSA officer. Either the applicant or the official can fill out the form. After applying, keep the receipt safe—it is proof of your application.
Note: If you are sick, too old, or unable to travel, a family member or friend can apply on your behalf. A letter from you or a doctor’s note is required.
What is The Eligibility Criteria For The War Veterans Grant?
To apply for the grant, you must meet certain criteria set by SASSA:
